Phonological naturalness and phonotactic learning

چکیده
We investigate whether the patterns of phonotactic well-formedness internalized by language learners are direct reflections of the phonological patterns they encounter, or reflect in addition principles of phonological naturalness. As a research tool we employ the phonotactic learning system of Hayes and Wilson (2008), which carries out an unbiased search of the lexicon for valid phonotactic generalizations. Applying this system to English data, we find that it learns many constraints that seem to be unnatural—they have no evident typological or phonetic basis, yet hold true of the English lexicon. We tested the status of ten of these constraints in a nonce-probe study, obtaining nativespeaker ratings of novel words that violated them. We used 40 such words: 10 violating our unnatural constraints, 10 violating natural constraints assigned comparable weights by the Hayes/Wilson learner, and 20 violation-free forms, each similar to a test form and employed as a control. In our experiment, we found that violations of the natural constraints had a powerful effect on native speaker judgment and violations of the unnatural constraints had at best a weak one. We conclude by assessing a variety of hypotheses intended to explain this disparity, opting ultimately for a learning bias account. Author emails: [email protected], [email protected]. The Effect of Complexity versus the Effect of Naturalness on Phonological Learning By
Brandon Prickett: The Effect of Complexity versus the Effect of Naturalness on Phonological Learning Recently a “surfeit of the stimulus” has been noticed in languages; specifically speakers do not seem to be learning all of the phonological patterns that exist in their language (Becker et al. 2007, 2008, 2011). Using the Hayes and Wilson (2008) phonotactic learner software to create a list of ...
متن کاملOn learnability and naturalness as constraints on phonological grammar
We report six experiments on learnability of four non-adjacent phonotactic constraints which differ in their attested frequency and phonetic conditioning factors; liquid harmony, liquid disharmony, backness harmony, and backness disharmony. Our results suggest that such phonotactic constraints can be implicitly learned from brief experience and that learnability of a phonological grammar may be...
متن کاملDifferentiating the effects of phonotactic probability and neighborhood density on vocabulary comprehension and production: a comparison of preschool children with versus without phonological delays.
PURPOSE To differentiate the effect of phonotactic probability from that of neighborhood density on a vocabulary probe administered to preschool children with or without phonological delays. METHOD Twenty preschool children with functional phonological delays and 34 preschool children with typical language development completed a 121-item vocabulary probe in both an expressive and receptive r...

Recent studies show that the adult phonological processing system constantly changes as a result of word processing experience; adult speakers can learn new sound patterns from brief experience processing words that exhibit the sound patterns, and how they process words changes as a result of learning. But how malleable is the phonological processing system and what is the mechanism underlying ...
متن کاملTalker variation in phonotactic learning 1 Running head: TALKER VARIATION IN PHONOTACTIC LEARNING Talker variation aids young infants’ phonotactic learning
We investigated how talker variability impacts novel phonological pattern learning in 4and 11-month-olds. Both age groups were better able to discriminate between legal and illegal phonotactic strings after exposure to multiple talkers than a single talker. It is argued that these data may be best accounted for by hybrid models including linguistic representations that abstract from talker iden...
